Viva Las Vegas

Sooo... I just returned from Sin City. I have a few thoughts.

The last time I visited, must have been years ago. Its the same place that I remember, but I feel drastically different about it this time around. Chalk it up to heightened sense of responsibility, the fact that I took the trip on my own, or the crumbling world around me, but it was just not that enjoyable. I did a little search on my phone navigator for restaurants that were "vegetarian". I got THREE, in the whole city...none of which were remotely close to where I was staying. I thought to myself that this couldn't be true, so I called Barrett and asked him to do a yelp search for me. Guess how many he found....THREE...oh, and a vegan donut shop (out of place?). Needless to say I pretty much had to fake it. Luckily the convention I was attending was put on by Best Friends Animal Society, so there was at least one vegan(!) option at the lunch I attended, which was probably the most satisfying meal I had in the last 72 hours. I know that just because I didn't find a restaurant that was strictly veg, that that usually does not mean there are not options at regular restaurants. Not in Las Vegas I guess!!!! I wandered around an entire casino, with something like 8 restaurants, and found very very little that was not meat based. What was I expecting, in the land of the $2.99 prime rib on every corner and all you can eat seafood buffet in every strip mall? I guess the excess of the whole city really got to me. I can't bitch too much about Vegas though...they are in the middle of nowhere, and I AM pretty spoiled in the Bay Area...I just get REALLY frustrated at a public that is more selfish than selfless.

Let me switch gears and talk about the good points of my trip.
Every aspect of my flight in, and out, went incredibly smooth. No horrendous waits at airport security (I even got to go thru a special express line), no lost luggage, and a fantastically large cocktail to end the weekend while waiting for my flight to board. Smooth sailing!
I had a pretty nice room, quiet, about a mile off the strip. The hotel wasn't flashy at all, and was pretty much occupied by Convention-goers and smatterings of couples getting married.
I heard this man speak, Mike Arms
Mike started off his career at the New York ASPCA, way back in the 60's. He told us stories that made us laugh, and quite a few that brought the entire room to tears. His main focus now is working with shelters and rescue groups nationwide to install and enhance their advertising and presence in their communities, to save more lives. His absolute dedication and compassion could be heard in his voice. He is a tireless champion of the unwanted, and a very effective communicator to those that care for them. His 75 minute speech spoke to the person I thought I was, but have clearly forgotten. I have a lot of work to do to realign my priorities, and a lot of information to share with my colleagues.

The rest of the convention was good too. :)

On a pretty cool side note... I got one of these as my rental car!

It was ridiculously smooth.

three day sick leave

i did this all day the other day.... among other things...and cutting out words. see soon.

Mona, Nicole, Trisha, Danny, Barrett and I visited the Cinebar on tuesday. It had been a long time since we'd seen Chris. He's got a gnarly stache and I wanted so bad to photo it....but it was too dark in the bar for the supercomputerphone to handle. Whatevs

I was pretty down all day. After coming back to work after 3 days, anybody will be in a funk. I love my job, don't get me wrong, but certain members of the public really irk me. I'm dreading learning adoptions because I'd rather help the animals directly than deal with the uneducated consumer public. I know I know, without people wanting to adopt, we'd never get any good dogs cats or rabbits homes, but there are just so..many...idiots. Speaking of idiots, do you thinkg declawing a cat is a good idea? This is what it looks like

they literally amputate part of the cats paws, with dog nail clippers. It would be like if a doctor took each one of your fingers and chopped each tip off, up to the first knuckle, with a pair or gardening clippers.
And laser declawing?

speaking of horrible things people do to animals they consider companions and completely different from those they choose to eat:
ear cropping

tail docking

people are so fucking naive and selfish.
------------------

I want to move here

Portland is so much freaking cheaper than the bay area. I'm sad to leave here...I love it...but nobody can be consistently raped by landlords and continue to deal with it. I'm not a fucking sheep. I'm not here to accept the shitty hand thats dealt. I'm poor but only in the monetary sense. I'm never going to college but I'm not uneducated. I'm never going to fit the picket fence married 2.5 kids golden retreiver mini van soccer mom lifestyle. It's selfish...its inefficient...its not fair to the next generation.

So for everyone who is striving for the "american dream" OPEN YOUR FUCKING EYES.

true pitty love

I'm so so so pissed off at the amount of ignorance regarding the treatment of pitbulls in this country. Since the whole Vick thing, a number of organizations and millions of people have spoken up in favor of convicting the bastard and saving the dogs. BUT with a little further research, you'll find that PETA is in favor of pit bull bans, BSL...and HSUS is opposed to rehabilitating pitties with fight history, even if they are well behaved.
It's such a crying shame that the cold hearted assholes that fight dogs have done this to the breed as a whole. They've turned them into monsters in the hearts of the american public, all in the name of a tough image and gambling. I see these dogs everyday...coming in to be surrendered because the owners can't handle them anymore. They bought from a friend who breeds....left the dog outside 100%...never socialized with other dogs...never did any basic training...encouraged "guarding" the home and family...never spayed or neutered. and there's nothing we can do for them...
Treating an animal this way is disgusting. You wouldn't treat any other member of your family this way, would you?
I just wish people would do some research before forming opinions or opening their mouths. The most loving and devoted and gentle breed is suffering due to our unwillingness to understand.
