Viva Las Vegas

Sooo... I just returned from Sin City. I have a few thoughts.

The last time I visited, must have been years ago. Its the same place that I remember, but I feel drastically different about it this time around. Chalk it up to heightened sense of responsibility, the fact that I took the trip on my own, or the crumbling world around me, but it was just not that enjoyable. I did a little search on my phone navigator for restaurants that were "vegetarian". I got THREE, in the whole city...none of which were remotely close to where I was staying. I thought to myself that this couldn't be true, so I called Barrett and asked him to do a yelp search for me. Guess how many he found....THREE...oh, and a vegan donut shop (out of place?). Needless to say I pretty much had to fake it. Luckily the convention I was attending was put on by Best Friends Animal Society, so there was at least one vegan(!) option at the lunch I attended, which was probably the most satisfying meal I had in the last 72 hours. I know that just because I didn't find a restaurant that was strictly veg, that that usually does not mean there are not options at regular restaurants. Not in Las Vegas I guess!!!! I wandered around an entire casino, with something like 8 restaurants, and found very very little that was not meat based. What was I expecting, in the land of the $2.99 prime rib on every corner and all you can eat seafood buffet in every strip mall? I guess the excess of the whole city really got to me. I can't bitch too much about Vegas though...they are in the middle of nowhere, and I AM pretty spoiled in the Bay Area...I just get REALLY frustrated at a public that is more selfish than selfless.

Let me switch gears and talk about the good points of my trip.
Every aspect of my flight in, and out, went incredibly smooth. No horrendous waits at airport security (I even got to go thru a special express line), no lost luggage, and a fantastically large cocktail to end the weekend while waiting for my flight to board. Smooth sailing!
I had a pretty nice room, quiet, about a mile off the strip. The hotel wasn't flashy at all, and was pretty much occupied by Convention-goers and smatterings of couples getting married.
I heard this man speak, Mike Arms
Mike started off his career at the New York ASPCA, way back in the 60's. He told us stories that made us laugh, and quite a few that brought the entire room to tears. His main focus now is working with shelters and rescue groups nationwide to install and enhance their advertising and presence in their communities, to save more lives. His absolute dedication and compassion could be heard in his voice. He is a tireless champion of the unwanted, and a very effective communicator to those that care for them. His 75 minute speech spoke to the person I thought I was, but have clearly forgotten. I have a lot of work to do to realign my priorities, and a lot of information to share with my colleagues.

The rest of the convention was good too. :)

On a pretty cool side note... I got one of these as my rental car!

It was ridiculously smooth.

Bikes, bugs, books!

Here are our "new" bikes!

Barrett's

Mine

They're probably like decades old, but the folks who owned them before rarely took them out of the garage! The only thing that needs work is probably the brakes on both, they're fairly old school. Barrett has rode his about 20 miles already around town, and its held up just fine. I've been trying to research mine, and have found that the company went south some time ago...and that they were sort of on the more "budget-minded" end of things for consumers in the 60s-70s, which is probably how old the bike is. It may be pretty hard to find parts for, but it will be fun to cruise around on! Thanks Bert!

We took Pickle on his first long road trip with us, down to Temecula to pick the bikes up. He had SO much fun getting to roam around in the yard and meeting Barrett's mom Heather, who's officially dubbed him her "Granddoggie"

We found a grasshopper that had only one jumping leg.

We got to see a lot of people we hadn't seen in months...which turned out to be pretty fun...good times were had by all.

I've started these:

Things that sprout

Day one of mung bean sprouting. Easiest thing in the world! Soak beans overnight, drain, rinse beans, leave moist but not in standing water, repeat every day until the sprouts are ready for eatin! Cheap and fun to watch if you like seeing things grow!

--------------
Dexter is available for adoption! Wow, what a feeling of accomplishment when I saw him waiting for his new home. We're so lucky to have an amazing fostering program at work that can give these orphaned kitties a second chance!

-------------
We've got a few trips coming up....
We're going to make super quick trip down to Temecula this weekend to pick up the bikes that have been so generously purchased for us by Barrett's awesome Dad, Bert!!
I think Barrett's is one of these...

I get to head to Las Vegas for the No More Homeless Pets Convention later this month, put on by Best Friends, a BIG sanctuary, shelter, and activist organization out of Utah.

Then early next month we get to go back to Portland!!

I know it seems like a lot of fossil fuel will be burned in the next month for these various skirmishes... but its not all for the sake of lollygagging around, I promise! We'll be securing non-motor transport, more specialized job skills to save more lives, and a potential new place to make a little home out of. All valid intentions!

Some weekend chores and the reason you're not rich

Well... a few things got done this weekend. And by weekend, I mean my weekend, which is Friday-Saturday. I do work tomorrow. As much as I used to say I loved my old days off, Tues-Weds, I admit it was because I had forgotten how many things there are to do on a Saturday. We've actually got quite a few farmer's markets around here, almost every single day, and flea markets galore! None of which, however, I attended today.

I did do these things..
made a bit of hot barbeque sauce..

dehydrated some strawberries...

cleaned and repurposed 5 glass jars...I'm not sure why I find the sight of beans and grains in jars to so pretty.

devised a plan to use a pile of warped floorboard we have, and a window cage we took off as a windbreak for the plants in our front area...

Our door is at the end of a driveway which acts as a giant wind tunnel. The plants look a bit weathered to say the least. I'm thinking if I can get them cut in 1/2 or 1/3 vertical pieces, I can weave them through the bars of the cage, with minimum materials required to fix them there...just some old fashioned muscle. I may need to borrow Barrett for that part :) Then, I could prop the thing up between the plants and the wind! Voila! no money, no class....100% function!

-----------------
I read an interesting short article about ten reasons "You're not rich". Attaining monetary wealth is the last of my concerns, but I laughed at quite a few of the points that were made because they illustrate the American human condition today. Some of it is ho-hum...but the best ones are the completely accurate "wealthy" or "well-off" viewed situations, but are really just "kid too small for his britches" scenarios.. My generation has been brought up in a world where most were handed everything they needed. The ultimate convenience era, the lack of skill development, the height of laziness...
----------------
Speaking of things that don't really matter. Here's a vice of mine...I think everyone needs one or two things that they can focus on that let some steam out. I don't personally own a TV, so I actually go places to follow up on this, but its a great release..
The Sharks won tonight! 3-1 against the Kings.

Rain! Rain!

Woke up this morning to find it had rained...yay!

That can only mean the beginning of Fall..and this pale kid loves the sound of that.

We also found spinach sprouts!!

And a quirkey little red club chair that mysteriously appeared in front of our door.

Barrett and I have both been sick these past few days with a flu bug thats going around up here, lame I know! But Its given me a chance to do more reading than a hectic day would normally allow.
I finished this:

And have finally gotten a good chunk of time to tear through this!

Its funny how reading about making homemade cleaning products, keeping ducks, and culturing wild yeasts can be more exciting than a true crime novel, HA!

Until next time, know that Big Brother is watching you!
